Case Summary
The Zodiac Killer terrorized Northern California from 1968 to 1969, claiming at least five confirmed murders (though boasting 37) and sending cryptic letters and ciphers to newspapers. He targeted young couples and lone victims, taunting police with unsolved codes and phone calls. Despite extensive investigations, DNA evidence, and numerous suspects, the killer’s identity remains unknown as of 2025, with two major ciphers still undeciphered.
A Killer Who Craved the Spotlight
NORTHERN CALIFORNIA – In the late 1960s, an unidentified serial killer struck fear across the Bay Area, murdering young people in lovers’ lanes and remote spots while mocking authorities through elaborate letters. Signing his messages with a crossed-circle symbol, the Zodiac claimed responsibility for killings, sent bloodstained evidence, and created ciphers challenging the public to decode his identity.

Confirmed victims were shot or stabbed in calculated attacks. The Zodiac’s communications—filled with threats, boasts, and puzzles—turned the case into a media sensation, but his true name and fate remain one of America’s greatest unsolved mysteries.

The Ciphers and Taunts
The Zodiac sent four ciphers; the Z408 was solved in 1969, revealing rambling threats. The Z340 resisted until 2020, when it was cracked—again, no name. The short Z13 and Z32 remain undeciphered. Letters included pieces of victims’ clothing and bomb diagrams.
Investigation and Suspects
Thousands of suspects were investigated, including Arthur Leigh Allen (prime but never charged). Modern DNA from letters has eliminated many but not yielded a match. As of 2025, Vallejo and San Francisco police continue testing evidence with advanced techniques.

An Enduring Enigma
Nearly 60 years later, the Zodiac case captivates amateur sleuths and professionals alike. No new confirmed crimes since 1969, but the killer’s boastful silence leaves questions: Did he die, stop, or simply win his game?
