Case Summary
Rachel Morin, a 37-year-old mother of five, was brutally raped and murdered while jogging on the Ma & Pa Trail in Bel Air, Maryland, on August 5, 2023. For 10 months, the case went cold despite DNA evidence—until genetic genealogy and a linked Los Angeles crime led investigators to Victor Antonio Martinez-Hernandez, a 23-year-old from El Salvador. Arrested in June 2024, he was convicted in April 2025 of first-degree murder, rape, and kidnapping, receiving life without parole.
A Trail of Terror Ends in Justice
BEL AIR, Md. – What began as a routine jog on a sunny summer afternoon turned into a nightmare for the Morin family and the Harford County community. Rachel Morin, a fit and devoted mother of five, vanished from the popular Ma & Pa Trail on August 5, 2023. Her body was discovered the next day in a drainage culvert—beaten, sexually assaulted, and strangled.

The case stunned the quiet town and sparked a massive manhunt. DNA from the scene linked to an unsolved Los Angeles home invasion, but the suspect remained elusive—until advanced forensic techniques cracked the cold case wide open.

The Attack and Initial Investigation
Morin parked at the trailhead around 6 p.m. and texted her boyfriend she was heading out. When she didn’t return, a search began. Her car was found untouched; her body, hidden nearby, showed signs of a savage struggle—multiple head wounds and strangulation.

The Breakthrough: DNA and Genetic Genealogy
Crime scene DNA matched a March 2023 Los Angeles break-in where a man assaulted a mother and her 9-year-old daughter. Video sketches were released, but no hits—until forensic genetic genealogy in 2024 built a family tree, identifying Martinez-Hernandez, who had illegally entered the U.S. after a suspected murder in El Salvador.

Arrest, Trial, and Closure
Tracked to Tulsa via cellphone pings, Martinez-Hernandez was arrested in June 2024. At trial, overwhelming DNA evidence—from Morin’s body and belongings—sealed his fate. Convicted in April 2025, he received life without parole, bringing relief to Morin’s family.
This case highlights the power of modern DNA tools in solving what seemed like an unsolvable crime, restoring faith in justice delayed but not denied.
