Case Summary
Joseph James DeAngelo Jr., a former police officer, terrorized California as the Golden State Killer (also known as the East Area Rapist and Original Night Stalker) from 1974 to 1986. He committed at least 13 murders, over 50 rapes, and more than 120 burglaries. The case went cold for decades until genetic genealogy led to his 2018 arrest at age 72. In 2020, DeAngelo pleaded guilty and was sentenced to multiple life terms without parole. As of 2025, he remains incarcerated in protective custody.
A Reign of Terror Across California
CALIFORNIA – For over a decade, a shadowy predator stalked neighborhoods from Sacramento to Southern California, breaking into homes, raping victims, and escalating to murder. Known by multiple names—Visalia Ransacker, East Area Rapist, Original Night Stalker—the perpetrator evaded capture until a revolutionary DNA technique unmasked him as Joseph James DeAngelo Jr., a former police officer living quietly in suburbia.
DeAngelo’s crimes began with burglaries in Visalia, evolved into brutal rapes in Sacramento County, and turned deadly in Southern California. He targeted couples, tying up men before assaulting women, often returning to taunt survivors with phone calls. His methodical approach—stalking victims beforehand, unloading guns in homes, and using escape routes—reflected his police training.

The Breakthrough: Genetic Genealogy
For decades, DNA evidence linked the crimes but yielded no suspect. In 2017–2018, investigators uploaded crime scene DNA to GEDmatch, building family trees from distant relatives. This identified DeAngelo, whose discarded DNA (from his car door and trash) confirmed the match.
Arrest, Plea, and Justice
Arrested at age 72 in his Citrus Heights home, DeAngelo pleaded guilty in 2020 to avoid the death penalty, admitting to 13 murders, kidnappings, and dozens of uncharged rapes. In an emotional sentencing, survivors confronted him as he received 11 consecutive life sentences without parole. A 2025 book by lead prosecutor Thien Ho reveals DeAngelo attempted to blame a “split personality” for his actions.

Legacy of a Landmark Case
DeAngelo’s capture pioneered genetic genealogy in criminal investigations, solving numerous cold cases since. Victims and families finally received closure after 40+ years of fear and uncertainty. As of 2025, DeAngelo, now 80, remains in protective custody at California State Prison, Corcoran.
