Case Summary
Between 1996 and 2011, the remains of at least 11 victims—mostly young women working as escorts—were discovered along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach on Long Island, New York. The case, known as the Long Island Serial Killer (LISK) or Gilgo Beach murders, remained unsolved for over a decade. In July 2023, New York architect Rex Heuermann was arrested and charged with the murders of seven women. As of late 2025, he has pleaded not guilty, and prosecutors have prepared for a single trial on all charges, supported by DNA evidence, cell phone records, and other forensic links.
The Discovery That Shocked Long Island
In December 2010, Suffolk County police were searching for Shannan Gilbert, a 23-year-old escort who had vanished after visiting a client in Oak Beach. During the search along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach, officers discovered the remains of four women wrapped in burlap. These victims became known as the “Gilgo Four”: Melissa Barthelemy (24), Megan Waterman (22), Amber Lynn Costello (27), and Maureen Brainard-Barnes (25). All had been advertising services on Craigslist and disappeared between 2007 and 2010.
Over the following months, searches uncovered additional remains scattered along the same remote stretch of beach and in nearby areas like Manorville. In total, 11 sets of human remains were found, including those of Jessica Taylor and Valerie Mack (both dismembered), Sandra Costilla (killed in 1993), and others. Most victims were petite women in their 20s involved in sex work.
The Investigation and Breakthrough
The case frustrated investigators for years due to limited physical evidence and the remote dump sites. Taunting phone calls made to victims’ families using burner phones added to the mystery. A task force formed in 2011, but progress stalled amid criticism of early handling by Suffolk County police.
A major breakthrough came in 2022 when a new task force re-examined evidence, including cell phone data, witness tips, and DNA. Investigators identified Rex Heuermann, a 59-year-old married architect from Massapequa Park, as a suspect. He lived near the areas where some victim remains were found and matched a physical description from a witness.
The Evidence Against Rex Heuermann
Heuermann was arrested in Manhattan in July 2023. Prosecutors linked him to the crimes through advanced DNA testing (including hairs found on victims matching his or his wife’s profile), cell phone records placing his devices near crime scenes and dump sites, and a “planning document” recovered from his home detailing methods for targeting victims.
Additional evidence included searches on his devices for serial killer-related terms, victim images, and news about the investigation. A Chevrolet Avalanche truck he once owned matched a witness description from Amber Costello’s disappearance.
Charges and Court Proceedings
Initially charged with the murders of the Gilgo Four (except Maureen Brainard-Barnes), Heuermann was later indicted for her death and those of Jessica Taylor, Valerie Mack, and Sandra Costilla—bringing the total to seven as of 2025.
In September 2025, a judge ruled that all charges would be tried together, citing overlapping evidence and similar methods. Heuermann has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody. His defense has challenged DNA admissibility and sought separate trials.
