On January 15, 1947, the severely mutilated body of 22-year-old aspiring actress Elizabeth Short was discovered in Los Angeles’ Leimert Park. Bisected at the waist, drained of blood, and posed, the killing became known as the “Black Dahlia” murder due to Short’s dark hair and clothing. Despite hundreds of confessions, taunting letters from the killer, and extensive police work, the case remains unsolved as of 2025—one of Hollywood’s most infamous cold cases.

The Zodiac Killer terrorized Northern California from 1968 to 1969, claiming at least five confirmed murders (though boasting 37) and sending cryptic letters and ciphers to newspapers. He targeted young couples and lone victims, taunting police with unsolved codes and phone calls. Despite extensive investigations, DNA evidence, and numerous suspects, the killer’s identity remains unknown as of 2025, with two major ciphers still undeciphered.

On December 26, 1996, 6-year-old beauty pageant star JonBenét Ramsey was found murdered in the basement of her family’s Boulder, Colorado home. A ransom note demanding $118,000 was discovered hours earlier, but no kidnapping occurred. JonBenét had been strangled with a garrote, suffered a skull fracture, and showed signs of sexual assault. Despite extensive investigation, touch DNA evidence, and numerous theories—including family involvement and intruder scenarios—the case remains unsolved nearly 30 years later, with Boulder Police continuing active DNA testing in 2025.
